Demolition begins on North Braddock strategic blight removal

Demolition is underway as part of Mon Valley Initiative’s North Braddock Housing Redevelopment Project, launched in 2024 to revitalize a five-block stretch that serves as a key entryway into North Braddock from Swissvale.

Four long-vacant, structurally unsalvageable properties have been removed, and the demolition of four additional properties is scheduled to begin next week.

Blighted buildings are more than just an eyesore -- they create safety hazards, decrease surrounding property values, and attract rodents and other pests. Blight can also strain public resources as fire departments, police, and municipal code enforcement are often called to address issues at vacant properties, diverting attention from other community needs.

Clearing these properties makes way for safer, more welcoming communities and opportunities for new homeownership.

To date, MVI has assembled 23 properties for redevelopment, including 20 parcels through the Allegheny County Vacant Property Recovery Program and three purchased privately. Funding comes from Community Development Block Grant dollars administered by Allegheny County Economic Development, along with Act 152 demolition funds from the state.

Following demolition of the properties, the project expects to add seven to ten single-family homes in North Braddock.
