Welcome to the MVI website

1998-2008- MVI Celebrating 20 years of working together to unite the communities and restoring the economic vitality of the Mon Valley.

The Mon Valley Initiative is a not-for-profit community and economic development coalition currently comprised of 12 community development corporations (CDCs).  By becoming a member of MVI, that community’s CDC is able to have access to the many services that MVI provides.  Our knowledgeable staff is able to provide support and assistance to a CDC with Workforce and Business Development, Real Estate and Housing Development, Housing Counseling and Community Outreach.  MVI offers services to member CDCs along the Monongahela River and its tributaries in three Southwestern Pennsylvania counties: Allegheny, Washington, and Westmoreland.

The Mon Valley Initiative was formed as a reaction to the economic and social fallout that the Mon Valley communities were experiencing as a result of the loss of their economic engine – the steel mills. Through the years the program areas have shifted as conditions warranted but all of the changes were made in efforts to address the conditions experienced through the valley. Today, the Mon Valley Initiative has 4 main program areas to include: Real Estate and Housing Development, Workforce Development, Housing Counseling and Community Outreach.

From our offices in the heart of Homestead, the Mon Valley Initiative continues to strive to meet its mission of working together to unite the communities and restore the economic vitality of the Mon Valley.  We work to meet this goal by renovating and constructing high quality, affordable housing and assisting communities to develop and maintain their main street districts; by providing individuals with the tools they need to enter in to the workforce; by providing in-depth, one on one housing counseling services to put people on the path to successful home ownership and by helping member Community Development Corporations to become efficient and effective organizations.
